Pond Inlet, Nunavut — The Honourable Senator Dennis Patterson, along with the Honourable Lorne Kusugak, Minister of Community and Government Services, today announced that their governments are jointly investing $4.564 million in the construction of a new sports arena in Pond Inlet. This initiative will support important economic and social growth in the region.
“Our Government, under the leadership of Stephen Harper, recognizes that investments in infrastructure will create jobs, stimulate our economy and support communities,” said Senator Patterson. “ I am proud of the commitments our government is making to fulfill our Northern Strategy. Infrastructure investments, like this new sports arena, will strengthen the social and economic potential for all individuals and families who live and work in Pond Inlet.”
“There will be many opportunities for youth to participate in recreational activities such as hockey, figure skating or curling,” said Minister Kusugak. “Additional programs and events will now be possible at the new arena throughout the year.”
The Pond Inlet arena will be used year-round, for hockey and other ice sports in the winter and other sporting activities in the summer months. The construction of this arena was identified in Nunavut’s 2009-2010 Capital Plan, under the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund.
Under the Canada-Nunavut Provincial-Territorial Base Funding agreement, signed on June 5, 2008, Nunavut will receive a total of $182.68 million from the Government of Canada for core infrastructure priorities such as water, wastewater, green energy, regional and community airports, as well as safe roads, and sport infrastructure.
The Government of Nunavut is working closely with the federal government to ensure that infrastructure funds are spent on priorities throughout the territory.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years.
