Ottawa – Leona Aglukkaq, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Minister of Health, and Minister Responsible for the Territories is pleased to see the Parliamentary Restaurant will begin serving seal meat. Seal meat will join other delicious selections on the Parliamentary Restaurant’s menu for all Members of Parliament and Senators to enjoy.
“This is fantastic news,” Aglukkaq said. “I look forward to be able to enjoy country food more easily when I am in Ottawa working for Nunavummiut. I am sure there will be many benefits of adding seal to the restaurant’s menu,” Aglukkaq continued.
The addition of seal meat to the Parliamentary Restaurant’s menu should help provide a boost to sealers who are being hurt by the European Union’s ban on their products. Seal meat’s addition to the restaurant’s menu should also help to expose some people who have never had an opportunity to enjoy seal to its wonderful taste and potentially the cultural significance.
“I have enjoyed seal all my life and I am glad that others who would not normally be exposed to seal will now have the opportunity to enjoy it as well,” Aglukkaq said. “Sealing is part of our culture here in the North, it is a part of who we are,” Aglukkaq concluded.
