Statement by the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and MP for Nunavut
This weekend, as we welcome G-7 Finance Ministers to Canada’s northernmost capital, there is an opportunity for our guests to witness and to participate in the unique and special culture found in Canada’s North.
From the magnificent grandeur of the northern lights to the real hospitality of Nunavut’s residents, Iqaluit offers more than just a backdrop to this important meeting; it provides a chance for the world to see and better understand the issues that are facing Canada’s North.
As they visit Iqaluit, our important guests will have the opportunity gain a better understanding of issues such as northern development and Canada’s arctic sovereignty, as well as the cultural and economic importance of the seal hunt to Canada’s Inuit population.
Our government is proud to be hosting these important G-7 officials as they continue their discussions on economic recovery. We are confident that their visit to this remarkable city will provide an opportunity for informed reflection on issues that matter to Canada’s North.
