Minister Aglukkaq will Continue to Stand Up for Sealers and Once Again Fight Against the Liberal Bill to Ban the Seal Hunt
Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Minister of Health, and Minister Responsible for the North, today reacted to the news that Liberal Senator Mac Harb reintroduced his bill calling for the end of the commercial seal hunt in Canada.
“The reintroduction of Liberal Mac Harb’s bill for the ending of the seal hunt is deeply concerning,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “Across our country and especially for us in Nunavut, sealing is a part of who we are – an important aspect of both our culture and heritage.”
Sealing is an essential way of life that is based on sound conservation principles. For Canada, sealing is about more than fur. The trade of other seal products such as oils and meat represents a growing share of what is already a multi-million dollar business.
“Alongside the sealing industry, our Conservative Government and other governments and organizations from all levels have taken a stand to defend the importance of the seal hunt on the international stage,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “As a result, it is disappointing to witness the reintroduction of a bill of this nature.”
The Conservative Government has remained united in its support of the thousands of sealers who rely on the seal hunt as a means of livelihood.
