Ottawa – Nunavut MP, Minister of Health, and Minister Responsible for the Territories Leona Aglukkaq applauds the official launch of the Conservative Aboriginal Caucus today. The Caucus held its first public event this week to celebrate the launch.
The caucus is made up of the six Aboriginal members of the Conservative Government. Rod Bruinooge, MP for Winnipeg South, is the caucus chair.
“I am pleased to be a member of this caucus,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “Our caucus can be a strong voice for Inuit, First Nations and Métis people and will help to encourage more Aboriginal people to take an active role in government.”
According to data provided by the Library of Parliament, the current Conservative government boasts the largest percentage of elected Aboriginal members in history. The new caucus wants to capitalize on this success and build on the Conservative Government’s progress addressing long-ignored Aboriginal concerns.
“It is great that our government has more aboriginal members in its caucus than both the Liberals and the NDP,” Aglukkaq said. “Our government takes the issues facing aboriginals seriously and we will continue to stand up for them.”
Minister Aglukkaq looks forward to representing the views of all aboriginal people in this important caucus.
