Parliament Holds Historic Vote To End Long-Gun Registry
February 15, 2012

(Ottawa, ON) -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, MP for Nunavut and Regional Minister for the North, today issued the following statement:

Today was an important day for Northerners, as our Conservative government kept its promise, and voted to end the wasteful and inefficient long-gun registry.

This registry treated Northern hunters like criminals for far too long.

I was proud to join with Yukon MP Ryan Leef, to vote on behalf of Northerners to scrap the registry.

We can now focus our efforts on the economy, and initiatives that deal with real crime.

I am disappointed that all Northern MPs did not speak with one voice on this important issue.  Western Arctic NDP MP Dennis Bevington ignored calls from the GNWT and local government representatives who wanted him to support our government's plan.  I am discouraged that the opposition parties fail to recognize Inuit today continue to hunt to provide food for their families.

It's part of our way of life.

I am proud to have stood in my place today, and voted in support of what my constituents wanted.
