Statement on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq
To be read by Minister Taptuna
On the occasion of the opening of Qikiqtarjuaq Airport Terminal
Provincial-Territorial Base Fund

Good afternoon,

I’m sorry I cannot be there with you today to celebrate this important new Qikiqtarjuaq Airport terminal building. Airports are one of our nation’s most valuable transportation commodities, and provide a major contribution to local economies that reaches far beyond the runway.

That’s why I’m proud that the Government of Canada, through the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund, supported the airport’s development in Qikiqtarjuaq through a joint federal-territorial commitment of over $4 million toward this new terminal building.

Energy-efficient and built to support the area’s future growth, this new terminal is better capable of accommodating both travelers and airport employees.

Our government is committed to improving existing infrastructure, and building new, modern infrastructure that will help communities maintain stable and healthy economies.

This new airport terminal demonstrates Canada’s and Nunavut’s strong commitment to working together to support key infrastructure projects under Building Canada, the Government of Canada’s infrastructure plan.

This initiative is another example of how our government is supporting communities across this country and I am pleased that we are working together to advance Qikiqtarjuaq’s priorities.

I’d also like to thank the Territorial government for making this project a priority. We are proud to be a partner in such a worthwhile endeavour.

Thank you.
